Today Ukraine ranks first place in export of walnut in Europe. Also our country has entered the top-5 producers of this product in the world. It was reported by the press service of the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.
However, there are some questions regarding the further development of the industry and exports.
This was discussed during a meeting between Olga Trofimtseva, Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine on European Integration, and representatives of UPO “Ukrainian Nut Association.”
“The development of production of niche products such as nuts are interesting for small and medium-sized producers, it is one of the priorities for the the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine today. We need to create cooperatives or clusters to develop industrial production and exports. Today production of nuts is fragmented by structure. This prevents both efficient access to foreign markets, and streamlining of the industry on the domestic market. Association of manufacturers can solve many of these issues, “- said Deputy Minister.
For their part, representatives of the Ukrainian Nut Association outlined major ways that will have impact on the nut business in Ukraine and export. In particular, these are development of modern processing technologies, implementation of quality preparation systems, preservation and marketing etc.
Today in Ukraine it is already planted more than 5,000 hectares of walnut, 600 hectares of hazelnut. In 2017 it’s planned to land 2,500 hectares of nut crops, including: walnut -1,520 hectares; hazelnuts – 890 hectares; almonds – 40 hectares. In 2016 exports amounted to 40,021.0 tons of nuts, the cost was $ 79,285.0 thousand, while the average price was $ 1,981.1. Imports totaled 1,921.0 tons, the cost – $ 13,563.0 thousand, while the average price was $ 7,060.4. The main exporting countries in 2016: Iraq – $ 13,107.0 thousand, Iran – $ 11,277.0 thousand, Greece – $ 5,457.0 thousand, Azerbaijan – $ 2,913.0 thousand, Belarus – $ 2,099.0 thousand.
